Punta Arenas(orSandy Pointin English) is the capitalcityofChile's southernmostregion,Magallanes and Antartica Chilena. The city was officially renamed asMagallanesin 1927, but in 1938 it was changed back to "Punta Arenas". It is the largest city south of the46th parallel south. As of 1977 Punta Arenas has been one of only twofree portsin Chile.
Located on theBrunswick Peninsulanorth of theStrait of Magellan, Punta Arenas hasall kind of facilities, in particular an abundance of banks, shops, supermarkets, pharmacies, hiking gear shops, a mall and a duty free zone called "Zona Franca".
